NOAA Fisheries has released three science-advice publications addressing genetic risk in offshore aquaculture. The materials are intended to help growers adopt practices that support healthy farmed seafood production while reducing the risk that escaped or cultured organisms could adversely affect wild populations. The guidance is part of NOAA’s broader effort to provide science-based tools for responsible offshore aquaculture development.
Producers evaluating marine or estuarine aquaculture projects should expect continued attention to broodstock management, escape prevention, genetic containment, monitoring and documentation. The publications may also be useful in preparing permit applications and responding to agency or stakeholder questions regarding interactions with wild stocks.
