California Sea Grant Accepting Applications for Two Extension Fellowships

Applications due: March 31, 2026 by 5:00 PM PT

California Sea Grant is soliciting applications for two extension fellowships: the Delta Extension Fellowship and the North Coast Seafood Extension Fellowship.

These fellowship positions provide recent graduate students the chance to work directly with California communities facing challenges related to water, fishing and coastal management. Fellows bridge the gap between research and community needs, helping translate scientific findings into practical solutions, gathering inputs from residents and helping communities build resilience.

This two-year fellowship, developed in partnership with the Delta Stewardship Council, is based at the University of California, Davis (UC Davis) and focuses on helping Delta communities prepare for and adapt to changes in water and environmental management. The fellow will work with residents in towns and cities throughout California’s Sacramento—San Joaquin Delta region to understand their concerns, share research findings and build local capacity to respond to challenges.

The fellow will be hosted by the California Sea Grant Social Science Extension Specialist at UC Davis and collaborate closely with the Delta Stewardship Council, the state agency working to advance California’s “coequal goals” for the Delta — a reliable water supply and a resilient ecosystem — in a manner that protects and enhances the unique characteristics of the Delta as an evolving place where people live, work and recreate.

Key activities will include:

  • Help run a community survey to gather Delta residents’ perspectives, including outreach to communities, analyzing results and sharing findings.
  • Research and communicate how water management decisions affect Delta communities.
  • Gather information about community resilience training needs for Delta residents and organize trainings to address those needs.
