The U.S. Senate has unanimously passed legislation to reauthorize and expand the Harmful Algal Bloom and Hypoxia Research and Control Act (HABHRCA), ensuring a stronger, more coordinated federal response to harmful algal blooms (HABs).
HABs remain a growing concern for aquaculture operations, threatening fish health, water quality, and the economic stability of coastal communities. “Unchecked HABs can threaten our marine life and coastal ecosystems, the livelihoods of our commercial fisheries and coastal communities, and the health and well-being of Alaskans,” said Senator Dan Sullivan (R-Alaska), who helped lead the effort.
The legislation aims to improve monitoring systems and develop effective mitigation strategies – steps that will be critical in protecting aquaculture facilities, fisheries, and the broader seafood supply chain from the increasing risks posed by algal blooms.
