Congress Reintroduces Bipartisan Bill to Combat Marine Debris

U.S. lawmakers have reintroduced the Save Our Seas (S.O.S.) 2.0 Amendments Act of 2025, a bipartisan bill aimed at strengthening national efforts to address marine debris. Led by Reps. Suzanne Bonamici (D-OR), Uifa’atali Amata Radewagen (R-AS), and James Moylan (R-GU), the legislation enhances the work of the Marine Debris Foundation and extends NOAA’s Marine Debris Program through 2029. Key provisions include authorizing a foundation headquarters near Washington, D.C., expanding cleanup support, and allowing NOAA to enter nontraditional partnerships. A Senate version has advanced through the Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation.
