Nonprofit gets 6.4 acres on northern shore of Agua Hedionda Lagoon in Carlsbad
NRG Energy has donated 6.6 acres along the Agua Hedionda Lagoon to the Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute, enabling a major expansion of its Carlsbad fish hatchery. The facility, which has been operating on NRG land since 1995, focuses on restoring white seabass populations and developing sustainable marine aquaculture methods.
The expanded site will double the institute’s workspace and support new ventures in cultivating edible seaweed, shellfish, and sea cucumbers. These integrated systems use seabass waste to nourish other marine life, promoting a sustainable and efficient closed-loop model.
Hubbs-SeaWorld leaders highlighted the urgent need to boost domestic seafood production, noting that over 80% of seafood consumed in the U.S. is imported, much of it farmed overseas. The institute envisions the U.S. as a global leader in sustainable marine food systems.
Supporters, including Rep. Mike Levin, praised the initiative’s potential to drive innovation and food security amid climate change.
