California’s only native sunfish reintroduced at Granite Regional Park

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) is reintroducing Sacramento perch, the state’s only native sunfish, into Sacramento ponds to assess their survival and appeal to anglers. Recently, 3,000 juvenile perch were stocked into Granite Regional Park, with some larger, catchable-sized fish included. Since non-native sunfish hinder their reproduction, CDFW is experimenting with older fish that may better coexist. Once abundant in California, Sacramento perch have been displaced due to habitat changes and competition. Their resilience to various environmental conditions makes them suitable for urban fisheries, and this effort aims to restore their population while expanding fishing opportunities.
