US lawmakers seek to strengthen, reauthorize algal bloom research efforts

Federal lawmakers have reintroduced a bill to reauthorize and strengthen the Harmful Algal Bloom and Hypoxia Research and Control Act (HABHRCA). The legislation aims to enhance coordination between state and federal agencies in responding to harmful algal blooms (HABs), which are worsening due to climate change. U.S. Rep. Suzanne Bonamici emphasized that the bill would help coastal and freshwater communities monitor, mitigate, and prevent the negative impacts of HABs on fisheries, tourism, and public health.
