Progress made for California aquaculture legislation (AB 3220 – Mariculture)

A bill which seeks to expedite the review and approval process for mariculture projects in California has received bipartisan support, passing onto the state Appropriations Committee.

A bill in the California Assembly, AB 3220, sponsored by Assemblywoman Diane Papan and supported by both political parties, aims to improve the efficiency of aquaculture project reviews. It directs the California Department of Fish and Wildlife to explore obtaining state verification authority from federal agencies to streamline the approval process for mariculture projects. The bill, backed by marine solutions organization AltaSea, seeks to expedite the approval of projects involving the cultivation and harvesting of aquatic plants and animals. Another bill sponsored by AltaSea, promoting carbon dioxide removal projects, also advanced to the California State Appropriations Committee. AltaSea’s president praised the bipartisan support for these bills and their potential to reduce emissions and advance California’s environmental sustainability goals.
