California yellowtail (Seriola dorsalis) is a highly-valued fish species in southern California and is considered an excellent food fish, with an existing market for fresh sushi-grade product and exhibiting successful commercial rearing methods.
Farmed yellowtail has previously been provided to commercial growers as part of demonstration trials, primarily in Mexico — but great potential also exists to expand in Southern California as well, where Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute is involved in efforts to permit an offshore commercial yellowtail farm in federal waters.
Soy Aquaculture Alliance members Kansas Soybean Commission and Ohio Soybean Council helped fund the project which tested two high-protein selectively bred strains of soybean meal in a laboratory optimization trial of yellowtail.
The objective was to repeatedly demonstrate the effectiveness of diets based on soy protein for this species, followed by testing in a grow out simulation, toward expanding the market for U.S. soybeans in domestic aquaculture feeding programs.
