California Sea Grant: Call for Proposals: Microplastics Research Program

New Research Funding Opportunity
Letter of Intent due March 24, 2023

Microplastic Research Program

Microplastic particles are pervasive in our environment and communities. The estimated amount of plastic that enters the global ocean is anticipated to increase exponentially each year. Exposure to microplastics can cause adverse effects on marine life. Meanwhile, disadvantaged human communities may have disproportionate exposure to microplastics because of proximity to plastic manufacturing facilities, dense highways and other causes of plastic particle emissions.

California Sea Grant and the California Ocean Protection Council (OPC) are now seeking applications for projects lasting up to two years in duration for two separate research calls to advance microplastics understanding and management in California, consistent with the priorities outlined in the California Ocean Litter Strategy and Statewide Microplastics Strategy.

Proposals should address:
  • Research Call 1) Improved understanding of aquatic microplastic contamination sources and ecological sensitivity; or
  • Research Call 2) Microplastic removal efficacy of low impact development (LID): Structural best management practices.

There is a total of $1,450,000 available for this combined research solicitation. See the Request for Proposals (RFP) for detailed research priorities of this funding opportunity (linked below).
