Oyster Tracker rebrands to BlueTrace

BlueTrace logo nameDark

With over 120 clients in 12 states and 4 countries, Oyster Tracker has grown from an oyster farm management product to a company offering a range of management, compliance and traceability solutions. Today Oyster Tracker helps shellfish harvesters, farmers, dealers, and wholesalers manage their operations and stay compliant with evolving regulations.

The name BlueTrace encompasses the Oyster Tracker business today and the opportunity ahead. Reasons for the name change include:

1)  The opportunities are broader than oysters: Today BlueTrace works with all shellfish (oysters, clams, scallops, mussels, even goeducks). In the future, BlueTrace expects to work with a full range of seafood, both farmed and wild caught.

“We already use Oyster Tracker to track and manage Chatham Kelp…BlueTrace is indispensable.”
–Jamie Bassett, Chatham Kelp and Shellfish Broker

2)  Traceability regulations are increasingly important to the industry: The cost and time spent complying with regulations is huge today. With a continued focus on public health and the new FDA Food Safety Modernization Act, regulations are evolving quickly. Being able to produce a digital traceability chain that tracks all Key Data Elements from harvest to table is critically important in all regulatory schemes.

A recent study of shellfish farms in our area showed farmers spend over $240,000/year complying with regulations. Reducing that cost while improving product safety is a huge win.

3)  The workforce is mobile and expects mobile tools: Current systems typically require sitting behind a computer. Working from a boat or truck with a phone, a rugged printer, and a mobile, cloud-based solution gives companies the flexibility to meet today’s needs.

4)  Consumers expect more information: From tasting notes to forming a connection with the harvester/growers, there is a huge opportunity to build trust and excitement in the shellfish industry for consumers. Customers increasingly want to know where their food has come from and that it was farmed sustainably.

The Oyster Tracker products will be renamed to BlueTrace, including:

1)  Farm Manager: Optimize shellfish husbandry, reduce mortality and improve operational efficiency.

2)  Shellfish Tagging: Save time while complying with federal and state regulations. Log your harvest and print compliant shellfish tags from your phone to a mobile printer.

3)  Distributor: Track all shellfish from harvest to table through the many steps of the distribution chain.
