Missed opportunities in US offshore aquaculture get attention in Senate hearing

Pacifico Aquaculture maintains its headquarters in the US city of San Diego, California, but instead keeps the heart of its offshore striped bass farm 60 miles south of the border, in Ensenada, Mexico. The reason, according to a recent conversation Kathryn Unger, president of the Stronger America Through Seafood (SATS), reported she had with senior executives at Pacifico: The US regulatory process is not clear enough.

“’The current situation makes it difficult to accurately assess business plans as permitting and expansion considerations are handicapped by an environment where there is very little confidence in the ability to receive permits,’” Unger said the execs told her.

Unger, also the managing director of Cargill Aqua Nutrition North America, in Minnetonka, Minnesota, shared her conversation with Pacifico as one of five witnesses to testify in Washington, D.C., Wednesday before the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation…
