Canadian Aquaculture Industry Alliance Rebrands as Canadian Seafood Farmers

The Canadian Aquaculture Industry Alliance (CAIA) has rebranded as Canadian Seafood Farmers, reflecting a strategic effort to position aquaculture more clearly within Canada’s broader agriculture and food-production sector.

The new name was approved unanimously by members at the organization’s September 29 annual general meeting. Canadian Seafood Farmers says the change recognizes that aquaculture is agriculture and reinforces the sector’s role in producing food, supporting jobs and strengthening domestic food security.

The organization is using the rebrand to advance several policy priorities, including greater recognition of seafood farming within agricultural programs, science-based regulatory certainty for British Columbia salmon farming, and modernization of federal management of the shellfish sector. The group is also advocating for policies that support domestic seafood production, rural and coastal communities, and investment in aquaculture.

The move comes as Canadian aquaculture faces significant policy challenges, particularly in British Columbia, where the federal government has established a June 2029 deadline for the removal of net-pen salmon farms. Canadian Seafood Farmers is calling for a policy framework that protects jobs, supports First Nations and coastal communities, and enables continued production of Canadian-grown salmon.
