California Aquaculture: In Plain Sight – Episode 3: People, Pathways, and Leadership

People, Pathways, and Leadership

Who Is Building This Industry and Who Comes Next?

Every industry is ultimately defined by its people.

In aquaculture, that includes the individuals managing broodstock, monitoring water quality, maintaining systems, leading operations, navigating compliance, and building businesses from the ground up. It includes researchers, educators, and organizations working to support and strengthen the sector.

But as the industry looks ahead, an important question emerges:

Where will the next generation of leaders come from?

Aquaculture education today exists across universities, technical programs, and hands-on training environments. But awareness remains limited. Many young professionals do not see a clear pathway into the industry. Others begin with interest in marine science or biology, only to move into adjacent fields due to lack of visibility or opportunity.

At the same time, there are organizations like the California Aquaculture Association and others working to lift the industry, support professionals, and create connections across the sector.

There is common ground here.

We to:

  • Build awareness
  • Strengthen career pathways
  • Support workforce development
  • Elevate leadership at every level

And perhaps most importantly – create a more unified voice.

Because while there may be differences across species, systems, and approaches, the future of aquaculture in California depends on collaboration, not division.
