Lantra Launches Aquaculture E-Learning Course to Combat Harmful Algal Blooms

UK-based training provider Lantra has unveiled its first aquaculture-focused e-learning course, designed to help the industry tackle harmful algal blooms (HABs). Launched on June 2 and funded by the UK Seafood Fund, the course provides standardized operating procedures for identifying and managing HABs—an increasing threat due to rising water temperatures.

Lantra’s Head of Aquaculture, Jillian Couto-Phoenix, emphasized that standardized protocols will enhance sector-wide data collection, support early warning systems, and improve outcomes for farmed fish. The course has already drawn strong interest from global aquaculture companies and Scottish salmon producers, with an estimated 1,800 professionals and students expected to participate.

Developed in collaboration with industry leaders including Mowi, Loch Duart, Bakkafrost, and the RSPCA, the training aims to give aquaculture workers the tools and confidence to report and respond to HABs effectively. RSPCA Senior Scientist Sean Black called the initiative a “positive step” for both animal welfare and the industry.
