A recording of an hour-long presentation describing the history, evolution and challenges associated the revising and updating the “Suggested Procedures for the Detection and Identification of Certain Finfish and Shellfish Pathogens,” aka Blue Book, is now available for viewing by clicking here. As noted in the presentation, the Blue Book is cited within 20 to 30 state fish health regulations causing angst and anguish amongst fish farmers across the United States for triggering unjustified and expensive testing. However, the Blue Book is an important aquatic animal health resource with suggested procedures for the detection and identification of certain finfish and shellfish pathogens.
A revision effort was triggered in 2018 to closely examine the Blue Bookmanagement structure; add relevant information on other coolwater, warmwater, and marine finfish species, as well as crustaceans and molluscan bivalves; address unwanted regulatory implications; and incorporate new and reliable testing assays for pathogen detection.
The revision process has been guided by a 13-member Steering Committee that is balanced by various agencies/entities, including federal, state, tribal, and aquaculture industry representatives, that utilize the Blue Book for aquatic animal health guidance. The update describes current progress of the Blue Book revision process, proposed committee structure for future oversight, new chapters, and suggested future revisions.
