COVID cost US aquaculture industry half-billion in first quarter, study suggests

The US aquaculture industry is taking it on the chin during the COVID-19 pandemic, and has lost roughly a half billion dollars in combined sales, finds a study released this week by two large universities.

The situation is very serious,” said aquaculture consultant Carole Engle with Engle-Stone Aquatic$, in Strasburg, Virginia.

Engle and the National Aquaculture Association (NAA) worked with the University of Virginia Tech’s Seafood Agricultural Research and Extension Center (AREC) and Ohio State University’s extension program to gather surveys from as many as 652 individuals associated with the industry between March 23 and April 10, 537 of which were deemed “sufficiently complete to be usable”…
