The cleanup and control of litter and debris from shellfish aquaculture has become a concern with the California Fish and Game Commission as a result of recent public activism. CAA members, shellfish farmers, and any affected by litter and debris concerns from shellfish aquaculture are strongly encouraged to attend this workshop (info below) and any other relevant meetings to provide input and reassurance from the commercial aquaculture industry. Please note that the litter strategy being formed will likely have a significant impact on future shellfish aquaculture in California and, as such, industry input during the formation of this strategy is paramount.

Workshop participants will have the opportunity to provide input on the state’s current and future priorities for ocean litter work and strategies to meet these priorities.
WHAT: The Ocean Protection Council and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Marine Debris Program are leading the effort to update and expand California’s 2008 Strategy. The Strategy will be expanded to include fishing gear, as well as suggestions for projects of a variety of scales and scopes so that entities including tribes, government agencies, industry, and nonprofits can make a meaningful contribution towards reducing ocean litter in California.
