Kennebec River Biosciences (KRB), a Maine-based leader in global aquatic health, has appointed Dr. Kathleen Hartman as its newest staff veterinarian.
Dr. Hartman joins the lab following a distinguished 22-year career with the USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), where she most recently served as the senior staff veterinarian for aquatic livestock health.
A Wealth of Expertise
During her tenure with the USDA, Dr. Hartman spearheaded critical initiatives in aquaculture epidemiology, trade coordination, and health program leadership. Her work has been foundational in protecting U.S. aquatic livestock and supporting the broader aquaculture industry.
KRB President and CEO Bill Keleher praised the appointment, noting her reputation for “energy, expertise, and enthusiasm” across the international aquaculture community.
“Kathleen is everything we could wish for in an aquatic livestock veterinarian, bringing expertise not only in fish health but also in shrimp,” Keleher stated. “She is a problem-solver with a deep background in aquaculture health.”

Dr. Hartman’s influence extends into several leadership roles and academic achievements:
- Leadership: Past president of the US Aquaculture Society and current board member of the World Aquaculture Society.
- Education: Holds a doctorate in fish health and a DVM from the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine.
- Awards: Recipient of the Joseph P. McCraren Award (National Aquaculture Association) and the Distinguished Service Award (US Aquaculture Society).
