CDFA Opens Public Comment on Climate Resilience Strategy for California Agriculture

The California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) is inviting public input on its newly released Climate Resilience Strategy for California Agriculture, a comprehensive plan to strengthen the state’s agricultural sector against current and future climate impacts.

As extreme weather, drought, and shifting environmental conditions continue to challenge food production, the strategy outlines how California can maintain its leadership in sustainable and climate-smart agriculture. It focuses on supporting farmers, ranchers, farmworkers, and agricultural communities in adapting to a changing climate.

“We are already feeling the effects of climate change and want to do all we can to build resilience in agriculture,” said CDFA Secretary Karen Ross. “This strategy reflects the many actions the state is already taking, and we look forward to hearing from farmers, ranchers, and the public about what more we need to support agriculture and healthy communities.”

The draft strategy is organized around three main pillars:

  • Supporting a Thriving and Resilient Food Sector – strengthening workforce development, infrastructure, energy resilience, and economic sustainability.
  • Protecting Natural Systems Critical to Agriculture – improving water management, biodiversity, soil health, and pest control.
  • Encouraging Resilient Agricultural Practices – advancing innovation, climate-smart farming, and long-term adaptation.

Across these focus areas, the plan identifies readiness gaps and outlines steps to enhance technical assistance, streamline policies, grow partnerships, and advance innovation throughout the agricultural landscape.

The public comment period is open through Friday, November 7, 2025, and CDFA encourages participation from farmers, aquaculture producers, industry groups, researchers, and community members.
