The Marine Protected Area Statewide Leadership Team (MSLT) is inviting nominations for tribal representatives to join this key advisory body supporting the management of California’s Marine Protected Area (MPA) network.
The MSLT fosters collaboration among agencies, organizations, and tribes involved in ocean stewardship and provides guidance to regulatory bodies such as the California Fish and Game Commission.
One primary and one alternate tribal representative are selected for each of California’s four coastal regions—North Coast, North Central Coast, Central Coast, and South Coast—and all eight positions are currently open.
Representatives from all California Native American tribes, regardless of federal recognition status, are encouraged to apply. Each appointment carries a three-year term and a commitment to advancing MPA program goals in outreach, enforcement, research, and policy. Participation includes 3–4 meetings annually (mostly virtual) and engagement in MSLT communications and work plan activities. Time and travel expenses are reimbursed.
Applicants must submit a nomination form along with a supporting letter or resolution from a tribal official.
