The California Attorney General has reached settlements with Clearwater Fine Foods, Seaquest Seafood Corporation, and Jayone Foods over violations of Proposition 65, which requires businesses to warn consumers of significant toxic chemical exposure. Investigations revealed elevated levels of cadmium and lead in various seafood products, with Clearwater’s clam products and items from Seaquest and Jayone exceeding the state’s safe harbor levels.
Clearwater will pay $304,165 in penalties and implement stricter quality controls to reduce heavy metal contamination. Seaquest and Jayone will pay a combined $81,440 and commit to improved labeling and supply chain oversight. All three companies have agreed to take action to protect consumers and reduce future risk.
Attorney General Rob Bonta emphasized the importance of food safety and pledged continued enforcement of state laws to ensure consumer protection.
