Federal funding cut for California farms program impacting farmers, food banks, schools

The Farms Together Program, which funded small farmers to supply food banks in California, is losing federal funding due to the Trump Administration’s budget cuts. The program, launched in 2023 and funded by the USDA, was part of a broader $500 million initiative to help small farmers sell to food assistance programs. Another similar program supporting local food for schools was also cut. Fresno Unified School District had received nearly $500,000 from it. The USDA justified the cuts by stating that these Biden-era programs no longer align with its goals. In California, the program supported 533 farmers, including 100 from the San Joaquin Valley, providing food for 55 food banks.
