Maine Sea Grant regains funding after industry, congressional pushback

The Maine Sea Grant program, which had its funding cut by the Trump administration, regained federal support after backlash from industry leaders and Maine’s congressional delegation. The program, a partnership between the federal government and Maine overseen by the University of Maine, had generated significant economic benefits, turning USD 1.5 million in federal funding into USD 23.5 million in state economic impact in 2023. The funding was reinstated after a meeting between U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick and Senator Susan Collins. Maine lawmakers, including Representative Chellie Pingree and Senator Angus King, strongly opposed the cut, highlighting the program’s vital role in research, workforce development, and economic growth for coastal communities. The decision to cut Maine Sea Grant’s funding was unique among 34 similar programs nationwide. Industry leaders welcomed the funding’s restoration, emphasizing its importance in supporting local businesses, jobs, and Maine’s seafood economy.
