The terminated groups play a key role in ensuring agencies use the best available science in their decision making.
The Trump administration is disbanding several expert advisory committees focused on space, climate, coastal management, and marine fisheries. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) stated the committees had fulfilled their purpose and should be terminated, in line with a Trump executive order requiring agencies to eliminate federal advisory committees not mandated by law.
The affected committees include the Advisory Committee on Excellence in Space, Climate Services Advisory Committee, Marine and Coastal Area-based Management Advisory Committee, and Marine Fisheries Advisory Committee. These committees provided guidance on space debris, climate change impacts, coastal conservation, and marine resource management.
The terminations follow a broader effort to reduce federal advisory committees, which are intended to provide expert, science-based guidance to government agencies. Critics, such as the Union of Concerned Scientists, argue these committees ensure policymaking is informed by science and free from political interference. The Environmental Protection Agency and other agencies have also seen advisory committee reductions under Trump’s administration.
