California tribe partners with state hatcheries to save endangered salmon

The Winnemem Wintu Tribe has signed agreements with state and federal agencies to restore endangered winter-run Chinook salmon to the McCloud River, their ancestral waters. The agreement, signed on May 1, includes a $2.3 million grant from California’s Department of Fish and Wildlife. Salmon have been unable to reach the river since 1942 due to the construction of Shasta Dam. Last year, the tribe collaborated with biologists on an experimental project releasing juvenile salmon, with over 1,600 successfully transported past the dam. Future plans are still being discussed, but similar efforts may continue this year.
