US Department of Energy pledges USD 25 million to advance seaweed production

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced a $25 million investment in deep-ocean seaweed cultivation through a project called Harnessing Automoty for Energy Joint ventures Offshore (HAEJO). Led by the DOE’s Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E), the initiative aims to develop a U.S.-based, large-scale seaweed biomass industry for energy production and industrial use. The project leverages the U.S.’s extensive exclusive economic zone (EEZ) and collaborates with South Korea’s seaweed cultivation industry to scale production by at least 1,000 times. ARPA-E Director Evelyn Wang highlighted the project’s potential to ease pressure on land and water resources, advance energy independence, and establish U.S. leadership in ocean industries. ARPA-E focuses on funding disruptive energy technologies critical to national energy security.
