Governor Gavin Newsom includes salmon, hatchery spending in 2025-26 state budget

California Governor Gavin Newsom has proposed a 2025-26 state budget of $322 billion, maintaining largely flat funding for salmon populations and fish hatcheries despite an unexpected $17 billion revenue surplus. The budget allocates $30 million to the Hatchery and Inland Fisheries Fund and $1.7 million for upgrades to the Silverado Fisheries Base and Fish Springs Hatchery. Additionally, $86 million is set aside for coastal resilience projects, including improving fish hatcheries for Central Valley Chinook Salmon.

The proposal includes $176 million for land conservation, fish habitat enhancement, and wildlife restoration, as well as $8.5 million from the state’s Climate Bond to remove obsolete dams and enhance habitat connectivity. In recent years, California has committed significant resources to salmon conservation, including $100 million in 2022 and $17 million for habitat restoration in 2024. Newsom emphasized collaboration with the Legislature to secure a strong economic and environmental future for the state.
