A new international collaborative project aims to support the research and development of technology and infrastructure to facilitate the shift of aquaculture from near coastal to open ocean environments.
A new international research project, Ngā Punga o te Moana – Anchoring Our Open Ocean Future, aims to expand aquaculture by moving marine farming from polluted, crowded coastal areas to open waters. Open ocean locations offer cleaner, cooler water, space for growth, reduced seabed impact, and natural food sources for farmed species. However, these exposed environments require advanced engineering to withstand ocean currents and waves. The project, involving Technische Universität Braunschweig, includes developing a resilient seaweed farm off New Zealand’s coast. Researchers are using wave pool experiments and computer models to study seaweed behavior in this high-energy environment, focusing on stability and growth conditions. Success could boost aquaculture production while reducing environmental impact.
