Hope floats for sustainable aquaculture in docuseries

New docuseries shares stories of regenerative aquaculture in U.S.

The new PBS docuseries Hope in the Water, produced by Andrew Zimmern and David E. Kelley, explores innovative and sustainable methods in aquaculture. The series, featuring Martha Stewart and other environmental advocates, showcases eco-friendly seafood practices, like sea scallop and kelp farming. Stewart joins Maine’s Vertical Bay scallop farmer Andrew Peters, who describes his labor-intensive, sustainable approach to farming scallops. Peters’ goal is to raise industry awareness, though consumer education remains a challenge.

The series also highlights Indigenous kelp farming in Alaska, led by Native Conservancy’s Dune Lankard, emphasizing traditional, regenerative practices. The overarching mission of Hope in the Water is to offer a hopeful outlook on climate change, presenting solutions that balance ecological sustainability with food abundance. The docuseries is part of Fed by Blue’s broader campaign to promote responsible food production and ocean conservation.
