USDA agrees to purchase more seafood for American nutrition assistance programs

The USDA has updated its guidelines for purchasing seafood, including Alaska pollock, salmon, and other varieties, for the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) and other federal food nutrition assistance programs. They plan to buy various seafood products like catfish fillets, salmon, pollock fillets, and others. These purchases will be made through the agency’s WBSCM system starting July 1, 2024. The decision has been welcomed by industry representatives, signaling an increase in seafood consumption among Americans. However, Alaska pollock suppliers must now meet new requirements, including being approved by the NOAA Seafood Inspection Program and adhering to specific packaging and labeling standards. Additionally, subcontractors must meet certain criteria to be eligible for bidding. All packaging must include allergen statements complying with relevant regulations.
