Steelhead trout, once thriving in Southern California, are declared endangered

Southern California’s rivers once teemed with steelhead trout, but habitat alteration, development, and barriers like dams have pushed them to the brink of extinction. Last week, California designated Southern California steelhead trout as endangered, hoping to spur conservation efforts. These fish, distinct from rainbow trout, migrate from the ocean to spawn in rivers, facing numerous obstacles along the way. Conservationists advocate for removing barriers, restoring watersheds, and addressing climate change to save this iconic species. With their survival hanging in the balance, urgent action is needed to preserve Southern California’s steelhead trout and the ecosystems they rely on.
