Seafood eco-labels will not save you

The recent investigations into labor violations in shrimp and whitefish processing plants in India and China have spotlighted certification standards groups like the Global Seafood Alliance (GSA), Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC), and Marine Stewardship Council (MSC). Many of the accused facilities hold certifications from these organizations, raising questions about the efficacy of certification in ensuring ethical labor practices. Andrew Mallison, a former CEO of GSA and standards director at MSC, emphasized that certifications are just a snapshot and buyers should take more responsibility for ensuring ethical sourcing beyond relying solely on certifications. He highlighted the need for buyers to be proactive in ensuring ethical practices rather than using certifications as a shield, especially in price-driven trading relationships.
