The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) has introduced a new mobile application called the CDFW License App, enabling residents and nonresidents to display their sport fishing licenses and validations on their mobile devices. This app also provides access to various CDFW online resources such as hunting and fishing regulations booklets, the Fish Planting Schedule, and the Online License Sales and Services website.
Users can download the app from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store, or directly from CDFW’s website.
Following its successful launch, the app will later incorporate hunting licenses and related validations by mid-2024. Assembly Bill (AB) 817, which enabled the transition to digital licensing and 365-day fishing licenses, was praised for its implementation by Assemblymember Jim Wood and received support from various fishing community stakeholders, including the Coastal Conservation Association of California (CCA CAL). Nathaniel Arnold, acting chief of CDFW’s Law Enforcement Division, highlighted the convenience of the app for anglers during license checks. The introduction of the CDFW License App is aligned with the department’s R3 initiative, aiming to eliminate barriers to hunting and fishing and enhance overall fishing experiences by promoting responsible practices and ensuring regulatory compliance. Additional information and FAQs about the app can be found on CDFW’s License App web page, including video tutorials demonstrating its functionalities.
