New State Packaging Law to Impact Seafood Business in California

SB 54 – Plastic Pollution Prevention and Packaging Producer Responsibility Act

The Plastic Pollution Prevention and Packaging Producer Responsibility Act (SB 54) in California aims to shift the responsibility for plastic pollution from consumers to producers. By 2032, the law intends to progressively reduce plastic material in the state. While the specific requirements are still being developed by CalRecycle, this law is expected to affect manufacturers, brand owners, and businesses operating in California. It may result in user fees and new recycling requirements for certain types of plastic packaging sold in the state, potentially impacting consumer product companies significantly.
