The University of Idaho seeks an exceptional candidate to fill a tenure track, fiscal year (12-month), research (45%) and extension (50%) program emphasizing fresh water aquaculture with a focus on water quality and other impacts on fish health and production in commercial aquaculture.
A scientist in this position has full access to the University of Idaho’s Aquaculture Research Institute (ARI) with facilities in Hagerman, Idaho and on the campus of the University of Idaho. These outstanding facilities create unique opportunities to participate in regional, national, and international research in topics related to fresh water aquaculture. This position will serve the aquaculture industry of Idaho.
Idaho is a leader in the national aquaculture industry, producing over 70 percent of the nation’s commercially grown rainbow trout. Idaho aquaculture also includes sturgeon, tilapia, catfish and ornamental species. Expansion of aquaculture is limited by the threat of domestic and foreign pathogens, which can close both domestic and foreign markets, by competition for markets, by limited supplies of marine protein requiring feed producers to switch to protein sources produced from grains and oilseeds, thus altering phosphorus availability, and by threats to water quality in Idaho which dramatically impacts health and productivity of aquaculture species.
This successful candidate is expected to develop a nationally recognized program in extension and aquaculture research including training graduate students and success in competitive funding. Specific research may focus on basic and applied aquaculture research involving impacts of management and water quality on health, reproduction and production of aquaculture species. Extension/outreach efforts will include working with commercial, tribal and agency collaborators as well as the ARI faculty to support industry growth and development, technical assistance, and educating employees in aquaculture businesses.
