On May 7th, the Secretary of Commerce announced the allocation of $300 million in fisheries assistance funding provided by Sec. 12005 of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES Act) to states, Tribes, and territories with coastal and marine fishery participants who have been negatively affected by COVID–19. Funds will be distributed to the Pacific States Marine Fisheries Commission, Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission, Gulf States Marine Fisheries Commission, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands and then through state or territorial agencies to eligible recipients.
Eligible aquaculture recipients include privately owned aquaculture businesses growing products in state or federal marine waters of the United States and the hatcheries that supply them. This includes all molluscan shellfish and marine algae. Salmonids (trout and salmon) farmed in marine waters are not included. Marine finfish not included in the USDA authorized CARES Act economic assistance program are included.
