Marin shellfish farms adapt to tighter state rules

Hog Island Oyster Co. has agreed to remove cultivation equipment from 1.2 acres of eelgrass habitat in Tomales Bay and to comply with other special conditions to get updates of its coastal development permits approved by the California Coastal Commission.

Hog Island also was granted permission to more than double the number of acres on which it is operating.

John Finger, Hog Island’s CEO, said, “We now have updated permits that allow us to continue to sustainably raise shellfish, expand our farm, and continue to safeguard the natural resources of our beloved Tomales Bay.”
