Courtesy of NAA:

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA), requests applications for the Aquaculture Research Competitive Grants Program for Fiscal Year 2018 to fund applied aquaculture research projects in the areas of: 1) genetics; 2) disease; 3) production systems; and 4) economics. The amount available to support of this program is approximately $1.2 million.

The purpose of the Program is to support the development of an environmentally and economically sustainable aquaculture industry in the United States by generating new science-based information and technology to address industry constraints. Results of projects supported by this Program are intended to help improve the profitability of the U.S. aquaculture industry, reduce the U.S. trade deficit, increase domestic food security, expand markets for U.S.-produced products, and provide more jobs for rural and coastal America.

NIFA is soliciting applied aquaculture research applications. Applications must:

  1. directly address major constraints to the U.S. aquaculture industry; and
  2. focus on one or more of the following Program Area Priorities:
  • Genetics of commercial aquaculture species;
  • Critical disease issues impacting commercial aquaculture species;
  • Design of environmentally and economically sustainable aquaculture production systems; or
  • Economic research for increasing aquaculture profitability.

Funding: The amount available is approximately $1.2 million, which is anticipated to fund four awards in FY 2018. There is no commitment by USDA to fund any particular application or to make a specific number of awards. This program will make research awards up to $300,000 (total project, not per year). Project periods for this program are limited to a maximum duration of 2 years. The start date of a project must be before October 1, 2018. Recipients may be eligible for a no-cost extension for a third year, but no carryover or extension is permitted for any project beyond 3 years from the start date (any unexpended funds must be returned to the U.S. Treasury).

Eligibility: Applications may only be submitted by State agricultural experiment stations, all colleges and universities, other research institutions and organizations, Federal agencies, private organizations or corporations, and individuals.

Deadline: Applications must be received by 5 p.m. Eastern Time on May 17, 2018
