1986 Coordinated Framework for the Regulation of Biotechnology Updated

Courtesy of NAA:

The White House has released a 2017 Coordinated Framework for the Regulation of Biotechnology and National Strategy for Modernizing the Regulatory System for Biotechnology Products. The Administration initiated an effort in 2015 to modernize the biotechnology regulatory system established in 1986 by asking the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Department of Agriculture (USDA) to accomplish three tasks.

  • Clarify their current roles and responsibilities in the regulatory process.
  • Develop a long-term strategy to ensure that the federal regulatory system is equipped to efficiently assess the risks, if any, of future biotechnology products.
  • Commission an expert analysis of the future landscape of biotechnology products.
