Port warms to aquaculture in SD Bay

Imagine San Diego Bay 500 years ago.

The native population lived off the land and fished in the bay, river valleys and coastal tidelands — maintaining an environmentally sustainable, self-sufficient society.

Today, the bay still sees recreational fishermen lugging their bait and tackle to a handful of piers hoping for a catch of the day. Commercial fishing boats head out to sea.

But more than 90 percent of seafood consumed in the U.S. is imported from abroad. You can buy freshly caught fish dockside north of Seaport Village every Saturday but your fish sticks and salmon burgers come from the Mediterranean Sea, the western Pacific, Scandinavian fjords and bays and oceans far away…
