Mexico’s aquaculture production totaled 325,000 metric tons in 2014, up 32.2% year-on-year, according to the country’s Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food (Sagarpa).
The increase was mainly led by tilapia and other species such as trout, oysters, carp and shrimp.
Total fisheries and aquaculture production in Mexico reached more than 1.75 million metric tons last year, Sagarpa said.
The national commissioner for aquaculture and fisheries, Mario Aguilar, said the volume of fisheries and aquaculture production in Mexico had an average growth rate of 1.3% between 2012 and 2014.
The news comes as three Central American shrimp farms have tested positive for early mortality syndrome, with suspicions the bacteria was brought from Mexico.
