WASHINGTON, May 12, 2015 –The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) today announced the launch of the new Data Gateway tool, designed to strengthen transparency and promote an open government by providing easy access to data and metrics on how the agency distributes funding.
“NIFA is making technical advancements to ensure that data are easily accessible,” said NIFA’s Director, Sonny Ramaswamy. “Transparency is a top priority, and we are committed to serving our stakeholders, Congress, and the public by using new technologies to provide greater openness.”
Users can sort and view funding by recent awards, congressional district, knowledge area, subject of investigation, field of science, and award trends. Currently the Data Gateway provides the ability to filter and export data. In the near future, the system will be upgraded to provide the capacity to easily share data, among other refinements.

The Data Gateway directly aligns with the White House’s Open Government Initiative, ushering in a new era of open and accountable government meant to bridge the gap between the American people and their government.
USDA has published many datasets to enhance transparency, increase responsiveness and stimulate economic opportunities with our stakeholders. Through the USDA’s Data Stewardship Working Group, the Department continues to identify new datasets for public release, or enhancements to those that are already available. NIFA invests in and advances agricultural research, education, and extension and seeks to make transformative discoveries that solve societal challenges. For more information, visit www.nifa.usda.gov.
