As ambitions go, feeding the world is a big one.
Yet, that’s precisely what researchers at the nonprofit Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute have in mind, beginning with a fish-farming project in the open ocean four miles west of San Diego Bay.
Leveraging three decades of research, this single project would be capable of raising 11 million pounds annually of high-quality fish, such as yellowtail jack and white sea bass, at low cost.
“My goal is to create seafood everyone can afford,” said Donald Kent, president of the institute.
