NOAA Fisheries has drafted a Climate Science Strategy as part of a proactive approach to collect and provide information on changing climate and ocean conditions to resource managers and affected sectors.
The Office of Aquaculture is offering an informational webinar at 3:00 pm Thursday, April 16th, on the draft Climate Science Strategy with a focus on topics relevant to the aquaculture community. The webinar will be presented by Roger Griffis, NOAA Fisheries Climate Change Coordinator. Dr. Mike Rust, Science Coordinator for the Office of Aquaculture will also be available for questions.
NOAA Fisheries has recognized that climate change is impacting ocean ecosystems, the nation’s valuable living marine resources and the people, businesses and communities that depend on them. And that the aquaculture community is uniquely positioned both to be threatened by the effects of climate change, and to potentially be a tool to mitigate its impacts.
Specifically, NOAA Fisheries sees five prospective intersections of marine aquaculture, future resource use, and climate change. These are: 1) impacts to aquaculture production due to climate change (e.g., ocean acidification impacts on shellfish aquaculture), 2) potential for aquaculture of shellfish and seaweed (algae) to mitigate impacts of climate change (e.g., sequestering carbon, bioextraction), 3) use of aquaculture to recover or enhance wild populations impacted by climate change, 4) use of marine aquaculture to make up the potential seafood deficit due to loss of wild fisheries impacted by climate change and 5) use of marine aquaculture to make up potential food deficits due to impacts of climate change on agriculture inputs (especially water).
The NOAA Fisheries draft Climate Science Strategy is designed to increase the production, delivery, and use of climate-related information to marine and coastal resource managers, resource users and others at regional to national scales. This webinar will provide an overview of the draft Climate Science Strategy with a focus on topics relevant to the aquaculture community. The strategy, its implementation, and opportunities for input will be discussed.
