NAA Webinar: Is Aquaculture Sustainable? Mythbusting Feed, Food, and the Future The First in a Series of Webinars on Sustainability

Many Americans are confused about seafood sustainability and that confusion is more pronounced when the seafood is grown on farms.

This NAA sponsored series of webinars will investigate the sustainability of aquaculture production systems and their products in terms of:   1) ecological balance, 2) species maintenance, 3) food security, 4) social concerns, and 5) economic considerations.  Although all of these factors contribute to overall sustainability, they are often overlooked in discussions.

These webinars will provide science-based answers to common questions. Are aquaculture practices sustainable?  Have feeds and conversion rates improved? What about the use of drugs, added hormones, and antibiotics?  How are aquatic and upland ecosystems impacted? What about water quality?  How do conservation organizations rate farm-raised seafood?   What about human rights concerns? How can aquaculture contribute to the economic health of communities?

Be prepared to answer your customers’ questions with science-based information from the experts. Is Aquaculture Sustainable?  Mythbusting Feed, Food, and the Future, will focus on sustainability in terms of feeds and feeding practices.  Topics to be covered include aquaculture’s importance and efficiency in producing high-quality food, the challenges of feeding fish, fish in/fish out ratios and what they really mean.  The nutritional value and safety of farmed fish will also be covered.

Presenter:   The webinar is presented by Dr. Jesse Trushenski, Associate Professor with the Center for Fisheries, Aquaculture, and Aquatic Sciences (CFAAS) at Southern Illinois University Carbondale.  Dr. Trushenski heads a research team dedicated to aquaculture nutrition and fish physiology.
