Japan Govt report: Aquaculture key to global fish supply

The sustainable development of the aquafarming industry is important for ensuring stable fish supply in Japan amid surging global demand for food, the government said in an annual report Friday.

It is necessary to help fish farmers expand operations through measures to reduce costs and stabilize prices, the report on fishery business said.

The report said it is highly likely the world will depend on aquafarming for most of its fish supply in the future due to the rising global population.

Japan should actively provide its knowledge and technologies to the international community to promote aquafarming while at the same time continuing to play its role in the management of natural fish resources, it said.

Aquaculture production in Japan in 2012 was 1.07 million tons, down by about 25 percent from peak levels in 1988. In value, production came to ¥484.2 billion, falling to about two-thirds of the 1991 peak.
