Lake Tahoe receives $3.4 million to fight aquatic invasive species

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced $3.4 million in funding to combat aquatic invasive species in Lake Tahoe, as part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. This funding will support efforts by the Washoe Tribe of Nevada and California and the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency. The announcement, made by director Martha Williams on June 6, highlights the importance of this investment in protecting native species like the Lahontan cutthroat trout.

The funding is part of a larger $17 million, five-year commitment for Lake Tahoe’s conservation and restoration. In 2022, 17 acres of benthic barriers were installed to control invasive weeds. Additionally, the Invasive Species Keystone Initiative will guide $2 billion in investments from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and Inflation Reduction Act, with a focus on increasing tribal engagement in restoration efforts.
