Renovated aquaculture technology research center prepares to open its doors

December marks the opening of the Center for Aquaculture Technologies Canada in Souris, Prince Edward Island.

Located within a renovated 21,000-square-foot building – renovations to the space totaled CAD 6 million (USD 4.5 million, EUR 4.3 million), according to a Theguardian.pe.ca. report – the center comes equipped with new research suites, molecular laboratories and wet lab areas for scientists to explore fish health and to conduct nutritional trials.

According to the news report, the center is aimed at studying the development and commercialization of cold- and warm-water aquatic species. It is also open to independent contract research services related to fish health, nutrition and genomics, according to the newspaper.

Six employees worked for the center initially in 2012, when it was a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Center for Aquaculture Technologies in San Diego. They have since been joined by 15 more employees, with the workforce expected to grow by a further 10 individuals in 2017.
