Champions of Change for Sustainable Seafood – Request for Nominations by Sept. 9

Courtesy of NOAA:

Last week, Department of Commerce Secretary, Penny Pritzker, and Council on Environmental Quality Managing Director, Christy Goldfuss, announced the White House initiative to recognize those in our seafood industries and communities who have been Champions of Change for Sustainable Seafood–honoring those leaders of innovation and sustainable practices that have established America’s reputation as a global leader in sustainable seafood management.

After decades of decline, America’s fisheries are witnessing  economic and ecological recovery, with overfishing at all-time lows. Although there is still much more work to do with many stocks still in stages of returning to sustainable levels, this turnaround story did not come easy. It took the collaboration and sacrifice by many to develop and implement the innovative ways to catch fish and produce seafood sustainably, and integrate the values of science-based management into the stewardship of these resources.

With National Seafood Month in October, President Obama and his Administration want to honor America’s fishermen and coastal communities for their efforts in providing sustainable seafood.

This is your chance to nominate someone you know and admire for contributing to the ongoing recovery of America’s fishing industry and our fishing communities as a White House Champion of Change for Sustainable Seafood.

Nominees may include:

  • Fishermen who are leaders and innovators in promoting sustainable fishing practices.
  • Seafood purveyors, processors, chefs, and other business owners who have created new opportunities for economic and ecological prosperity.
  • Innovators in the field of mariculture who are committed to sustainability and development in this growing domestic seafood sector.
  • Community leaders who are providing opportunities to recover and build sustainable local fishing economies.
